Installing a TopFin filter takes under 5 minutes and requires no tools. Hang the filter on the rear wall of the tank with the intake tube fully submerged, insert the cartridge, fill the filter chamber with tank water to prime it, and plug in. The filter should begin flowing water within seconds. If no flow starts, unplug, check that the intake tube is submerged and the impeller is seated correctly, prime again, and replug.
Installation Steps
Step 1: Remove the filter from packaging and separate all components — filter body, intake tube, cartridge, and any included media.
Step 2: Attach the intake tube to the bottom of the filter body. It should click or push-fit into place securely.
Step 3: Slide the filter cartridge into the cartridge slot inside the filter body. It should fit snugly with the carbon side facing the water intake.
Step 4: Hang the filter on the rear rim of the tank. The adjustable clip fits tank walls up to approximately 1 inch thick. Position it so the intake tube is fully submerged — at least 2 inches below the water surface.
Step 5: Prime the filter by pouring tank water into the filter chamber until it reaches the top of the cartridge. This prevents the motor from running dry, which can damage the impeller.
Step 6: Plug in the filter. Water should begin flowing over the spillway within 5–10 seconds. If using an adjustable model (SilentStream series), set the flow dial to your preferred level.
Step 7: Adjust the flow rate. For betta tanks, turn to the lowest setting. For community tanks, run at medium to full flow. The adjustable dial is on the front or top of the filter housing.

Filter Installation FAQ
My filter isn’t pumping water — what do I do? Unplug the filter. Check three things: (1) Is the intake tube fully submerged below the water line? (2) Is the impeller seated correctly — remove the intake tube, look inside, and ensure the impeller spins freely. (3) Did you prime the filter by filling the chamber with water? Re-prime, replug, and try again. If it still won’t flow, the impeller may be jammed with debris — remove, clean, and reseat it.
Do I need to rinse the cartridge before inserting? No. Use the cartridge directly from the package. Rinsing can wash off activated carbon, reducing its chemical filtration effectiveness.
Which direction does the cartridge go in? The cartridge inserts with the blue or white filter floss side facing the intake (toward the water coming in) and the black activated carbon side facing the outflow. Some cartridges are symmetrical — check your specific model’s instructions.
Can I run the filter without a cartridge? Not recommended for regular use. However, experienced aquarists sometimes remove the cartridge temporarily and replace it with custom media (sponge, bio-rings, or filter floss) for enhanced biological filtration. The filter motor will run without a cartridge, but water will pass through unfiltered.
